For those unfamiliar with Type 4, here's a quick breakdown of the format.
Type 4 is a casual multiplayer format in which all players share one huge singleton-style library composed of the most ridiculous, bonkers, goofy, broken, and overpowered cards in all of magic. The deck, which can be anywhere from s couple hundred to over a thousand cards large, is saturated with removal, board sweeping effects like {Wrath of God}, card draw, and counterspells. All players have unlimited mana of every color at all times, but may only cast one spell per turn. Players begin with a hand of five cards, and have no maximum hand size. Players start with 20 life.
As you may guess, this kind of shinanegans is full of out of control mayhem and laughs all around. The infinite mana can cause problems, but there are solutions in houserules.
Houserule option 1: X is a predetermined number. Perhaps X is always 10, or my personal favorite of rolling a 10-sided die before the game. X is that number that game. Or perhaps roll a d20 for X every time an X comes into the game.
Houserule option 2: Restrict activated abilities. Some activated abilities, like {Heretic's Punishment} will kill everyone and end the game immediately if the card carrying the ability isn't countered. To keep the fun going, you can limit the specific cards that do these things to once per turn, or make all activated abilities once per turn, or roll a d6 at the beginning of a game to see how many times per turn abilities can be activated... Some sort of restriction will keep the games going for a bit longer.
Type 4 games are quick and goofy. A great way to pass time between tournament rounds!
