Merfolk is a somewhat competitive deck type in modern, somewhere around tier 1.5. It has decent matchups against the majority of the modern metagame, and is one of the more budget starter decks in the format. The following is my current (slightly budgetized) merfolk list.
Main Deck
Lands: 20 17 Island 3 Mutavault
Creatures: 26 4 Silvergill Adept 4 Master of the Pearl Trident 4 Lord of Atlantis 3 Mothdust Changeling 3 Master of Waves 3 Merrow Reejerey
2 Phantasmal Image 2 Kira, Great Glass Spinner 1 Thassa, God of the Sea
Other Spells: 14 4 AEther Vial 4 Spreading Seas 4 Vapor Snag 2 Remand
Sideboard: 15
2 Tidebinder Mage 2 Spell Pierce 2 Annul 2 Spellskite 2 Hurkyll's Recall 2 Swan Song 3 Relic of Progenitus

Why Mothdust Changeling? Wouldn't Cursecatcher be better in its place?

I feel like kira is way better sb tech than mb. Also since thassa gets no buffs from anything else I'm not sure if i'd run her.

I dunno, I like kira mainly because it forces just about any deck to 2 for 1 itself at least once, and it also acts as a flying blocker against affinity, as affinity is easily our worst matchup. I also like one thassa mainboard, mainly because some decks (pod) have very little to remove her, and the scry is very relevant. Then again, for all aggro matchups she is instantly sided out.

I play fish in legacy and even in modern you want to swing swing swing. Kira is great for sb I just dont see her helping a bunch except g2. But it is your deck and you make valid points. I dont play modern either so I may just be totally wrong. I just love playing fish lol

yeah, the reason why I run 2 kira mainboard is because a big part of the modern meta is UWR control, which tends to pack enough removal for folk to be screwed over without something that forces them to lose card advantage.

Hey guys, any thoughts on {tidebinder mage} mainboard for zoo and pod? It almost sounds like you're trying to make your affinity matchup worse just kidding In all seriousness, though, I really wouldn't: it whiffs against Twin, Affinity, and UWR.
