So, karma. If you don't know how it works, this is it: each post had a "like" and "dislike" button on it. (Or just like, depending on what we decide). Whenever you click like or dislike, that +1 or -1 is added to or subtracted from the poster's total karma.
For the question: do we want karma here? Why or why not? What are your thoughts? What are the problems? What are the advantages?

Nope. At its core, it's a simple and efficient system. People, however, ruin it. Too many people will whine about every little neg. IMO, people left iMtG to leave the drama. No sense in bringing it here.

Quick note: Karma will use one of the super user keys we have available for this forum, which we have a total of 2. Super user keys store data that can be accessed at any time- not just when the user in question is online, and I feel that there are better uses for the two super user keys we have.

Two questions: What do you have in mind for the super user keys? I have heard we can upgrade the site, would that increase the number of super user keys if we needed to?

Yeah, I'm also wondering what other uses we could have for super keys. Maybe something about where people mostly post? I don't know...

Yes, more super user keys can be bought.
Honestly, I have no clue as to what we're going to use them for, but creating drama doesn't seem to be a very good idea. I should mention that we'd probably be using the karma plugin from the plugin library- important distinctions include being able to configure the time limit between +1s, no negs, and PUBLIC KARMA LOGS.

From the whole time I was on the other forum, karma was the biggest issue on the whole.
Can the super keys (I'll admit to not knowing what they are) instead be used to link cards? How about tag other users in a post?

I actually like the dislike button. I allows for a wider range of feedback, and gives a clearer picture of the communities feelings.
In a "Like Only" world: If 10 people like something and 90 say meh, it had 10 Likes. If 10 people like something and 90 people HATE it, still just 10 Likes.

I was fine with the way the karma system worked, too. When I was a new member, I knew who I could trust much sooner than I could otherwise with the karma tool.

What about something like karma but per post? it wouldn't show up with a person's profile. That way we could see if people liked or disliked a certain post, but it wouldn't be added to the person's profile so there might be less complaining.
Just a thought.

People are not immune to criticism, but reputations cannot be tarnished by vindictive individuals. I still believe anonymity helps keep some honesty to the system. More likely to prevent retaliation and make people less reluctant to give their opinion. Of course, it IS tiring to monitor the logs...

Before we discuss anonymity and likes only and what not, first we need to decide whether we want karma or not. The available plugin may or may not have these features, there's no point discussing the features we want just yet.

As a (former) moderator over at the other forums, as well as the user with highest karma count by a rather wide margin, I just want to toss in my opinion that the system was silly and had no real purpose.
As a moderator, I had access to the logs of karma which I checked frequently. I saw a lot of negging for the strangest reasons, blatant trolling, vindictive stalking, and I recieved a multitude of PMs from various users asking me to look at their karma history, confused or hurt as to why they were being punished for their posts. I saw it cause plenty of conflict, but it couldn't fix the problems that it itself created for people - it could easily make things worse, however.
As the ringleader of the Karma Black Market, all I can say is that the system was... Let's call it inaccurate? Anyone above a certain number was infallible on a pedestal, and anyone below a certain number was karma shark-bait. I felt like I had some sort of shield (that I didn't deserve) that kept me from being negged with my number that high - and I saw others get slammed time and time again, no matter how hard they tried to get out of the negatives. I didn't like either if these. A stupid number shouldn't effect how we view each other - we're all balanced individuals, no better or worse than one another, and we shouldn't have a number next to our names that represents how well we should be treated by others. Because that's what it boils down to. That's how that number is seen. And I was always irked by that.

Here Gorzo, well spoken, have some more karma XD okok, but on a more serious not, i think that either positive only or karma by post rather than user would be the most useful and effective. letting one know about the opinions of other either only in a positive way or in a way that does not tarnish their reputation.

It's silly.
I would see people neggin my trade thread or things that were expressed as purely personal preference. IE - I like ice cream (neg karma)
Gorzo is right about vindictive stalking and basically neg wars. IBtrickey the most well known -karma reciever as he would complain about it each time. Eventually he just drew a neg from myself for the 20th or so complaint.
I found myself appeasing someone because they were sad about karma. That's stupid.
I feel there should be a basic Life/Internet rule for everyone to understand and that is: not everyone is going to like you or your opinion.
It's just truth.
